Things you should do to avoid post-vacation return to work anxiety

post-vacation-anxiety

It’s vacation season, we are looking forward to the good times and all the sun we can soak in. Returning to the office after a vacation can be challenging, as you may experience post-vacation blues or a sense of disorientation. Here are some recommendations to help ease the transition while making the most of your return to work and staying motivated for your next time off!

1. Plan ahead:

Before your vacation ends, you should spend some time organizing your tasks and priorities for the first few days back. It will give you a clear roadmap and help you feel more prepared when you return.

2. Transition day:

Consider planning a transition day between your vacation and your first day back to work. It will give you time to unpack, catch up on household chores, and mentally prepare for the transition.

3. Block the first morning back:

Consider blocking off the first morning of your return to work to focus on catching up and regaining your workflow.

  • Avoiding unnecessary meetings or appointments during this time.
  • Use this dedicated time to go through your emails, messages, and any pending tasks that require your immediate attention.

By setting aside uninterrupted time, you can regain control over your workload and avoid feeling overwhelmed by an overflowing inbox or a sudden influx of tasks. It allows you to ease into work at your own pace and establish a sense of productivity from the start.

4. Arrive early:

On your first day back, try to arrive a little earlier than usual. It will give you some quiet time to settle in, catch up on emails, and plan your day without feeling rushed.

5. Reflect on your vacation:

Take a few moments to reflect on the positive aspects of your vacation and bring those feelings into your work environment. Recall the experiences, moments of relaxation, and any lessons you learned during your time off. This can help uplift your mood and provide motivation.

6. Ease into your workload:

Rather than diving headfirst into your full workload, consider gradually ramping up your work hours and responsibilities. Start by focusing on essential tasks or projects and gradually increase your workload over a few days or a week. This approach allows you to re-acclimate to your work routine without feeling overwhelmed. Prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance, and communicate with your supervisor or team members to ensure a smooth transition.

7. Prioritize self-care:

Incorporate self-care activities into your daily routine, even when you’re back at work. Take breaks, practice mindfulness exercises, or engage in activities that help you relax and recharge. This will support your overall well-being and help alleviate any lingering post-vacation blues.

8. Set new goals:

Use your refreshed mindset to set new goals or reevaluate existing ones. This can bring a sense of purpose and excitement to your work and help you stay motivated and focused.

9. Plan your next vacation:

Having something to look forward to can make returning to work more manageable. Start thinking about your next vacation or even short breaks you can take throughout the year. This anticipation can help alleviate the post-vacation blues and give you something to work towards.

Remember, the return to work after a vacation is a gradual process, and it’s normal to feel a bit out of sync initially. Give yourself some time and be patient as you readjust to your work routine.
